BANDING TOGETHER 2018: Back to the 80's!

BANDING TOGETHER 2018: Back to the 80's!

November 07, 2018

On October 11th, MentorPrize hosted its second annual fundraiser in support of its efforts to solve the mentorship gap. The “Banding” Together event underscored the need for more quality mentoring relationships so that children and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds get the support everyone deserves.

Guests gathered at the Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase where they enjoyed an 80’s themed evening with live music from local band Mommy's Little Helper and special guest performances by mentees. The club was transformed by SparkleMonkey into a totally awesome dance party complete with the World’s Largest Pac-Man game. A silent auction attracted heavy bidding for once-in-a-lifetime experiences, sporting events, and top restaurants.

It was the kind of day that would have made Willie Hughes smile from ear to ear.  The weather was perfect for the more than 800 attendees as they participated in sporting and family-friendly activities across the welcoming campus of Mater Dei School in Bethesda, Maryland.  The guests enjoyed food hot off the bbq and grilled to perfection by Mater Dei’s President, Ned Williams, and Headmaster Billy McMurtrie, and were entertained by live musical performances including Georgetown’s acapella singing group, Sean Gaiser , Mommy’s Little Helper, and Mater Dei’s own 8th grade band, Long Lost Cousins.

More than 600 guests gathered at The Mellon Auditorium, beneath serenely illuminated pink cherry blossom trees, channeling DC artist Maggie O'Neill's signature painting,"Flynn's Jefferson Memorial" to celebrate the life of Flynn Thomas Fry and raise money to support individuals with Down syndrome.  In his short life, Flynn taught so many how to love, respect and appreciate people with differing abilities.
